Alustil's "Timeless" Kitchen: A Masterpiece of Functionality and Elegance

Golden A' Design Award Winner Transforms Ordinary Cook Space into a Work of Art

The "Timeless" kitchen is a testament to Alustil's innovative approach to design. The inspiration behind this masterpiece is the kitchen's role as a communication hub and mini working space. The design team sought to elevate the ordinary cook space by incorporating elements of nature, particularly water streaming down a window. This theme is expressed through the vertical lines of the shelving, door handles, pops of colours, surface engraving, and pendant lampshade.

What sets "Timeless" apart from other kitchen designs is its unique combination of aesthetics and functionality. The base cabinets are made of aluminium, known for its structural strength and environmental features. The cabinet interior is designed with edgeless corners for easy cleaning, and peg holes and brackets allow for flexible shelf height. The design's distinctive lines, colours, and engravings add a touch of elegance, transforming the kitchen into a work of art.

The "Timeless" kitchen was realized using a range of materials and techniques. Powder-coated aluminium was used for the cabinet carcase, body, and handles, while powder-coated metal and clear glass were used for the open shelves. The door panels, worktops, and cabinet sides feature compact panels, engraved with a new technique to create a V-shaped valley without compromising structural strength. The handles are painted in Lava Green and coated with a protective layer to withstand scratches and reduce wear and tear.

The design project, which started in Sydney, Australia in November 2019 and finished in Johor, Malaysia in March 2020, was exhibited in Guangzhou, China at the CBD FAIR (GUANGZHOU) 2020 - THE 22nd China (Guangzhou) International Building Decoration Fair. The design research was based on translating the reminiscence of water into the design and realizing it with features of the materials used without compromising functionality, durability, and elegance.

The "Timeless" kitchen design faced several challenges, including engraving the vertical lines deep enough to create a V-shaped valley on the already thin compact panels used on door panels and waterfall worktop of the island without compromising its structural strength. The team also had to find suitable materials to replace the wood of the pendant lamp to increase transparency and resemble a cloud more than the original material designed. Finally, the team had to ensure that the designer's signature colour, Lava Green, could be applied to the powder-coated aluminium handles in a way that would withstand scratches and prolong its colour.

Despite these challenges, Alustil's "Timeless" kitchen design stands as a testament to the team's dedication to creating a kitchen that is not just a space for cooking, but a masterpiece of design. The design was awarded the Golden A' Kitchen Furniture, Equipment and Fixtures Design Award in 2021, a testament to its outstanding and trendsetting design that advances art, science, design, and technology.
